WARNING: TL;DR AHEAD.
This is the character reference part of my audition for The Book of Stories OCT, which sounds totally awesome and I really hope I get in. Also I FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO MAKE THE PAPER BACKGROUND NOT SUCK; TAKE THAT PHOTOSHOP.
'Nyway, here is the necessary info for my OC Moira and her pet Furrim* Pippin. I'm not sure if he counts as a whole second character, but he gets his own info anyway.
PLUS ALSO: Look, she has almost normal heads-high proportions! Not really, but closer than usual!
*Furrims as a species are copyright
And they are awesome and have their own club. You should check it out: [link]
Moira Angela Duncan
Five foot five inches. Hair is a weird dark blonde brassy color. Poster child for bushy man-eyebrows.
Mudd. Mudd is awesome.
Moira lives in a very similar world to ours, but where magic-users (the Gifted) and normal people (the Mundane) live in general harmony. Moira’s family is one with deep roots in magic, and she’s heartbroken when she never shows signs of having any magical power to speak of. While it’s by no means uncommon for two magical parents to produce a Mundane child, she’d spent her young life surrounded by Gifted people, and had always thought she’d be one. After her thirteenth birthday, the definitive now-or-never age for powers to show up, she was slightly depressed, until she discovered an enormous book (not to be confused with The Book,) on the subject of alchemy, or potion-making. Since then, she’s been secretly teaching herself the whole book, and has a secret setup in the bowels of her school filled with her materials, which she has gathered/ borrowed/ filched/ bought from various places. The only thing to know about her hobby is Pippin, her pet Furrim (see Pippin’s description for more info). The trouble with her obsession is that Alchemy is frowned upon in the Gifted society, which is why she's kept it a secret.
Moira’s outwardly kind of a bitch. She’s snarky, defensive, stubborn, rude, and wary of strangers. She pretends not to care about magic or her lack of it, even though there’s nothing in the world she wants more then to be Gifted like most of her family and friends; she’s actually slightly embarrassed by not having powers, and definitely a little bitter. Also generally pessimistic and cynical. If one was to put up with Moira's attitude long enough, you'd find she's actually not a bad person, she just distances herself from people and isn't terribly keen on trusting. Pippin's the only person she really confides in, which she would claim doesn't bother her, but so deep down that even she doesn't realize/wouldn't admit it, she wants real friends.
Fun fact: She has a crippling, paralyzing phobia of drowning/ large amounts of water.
Given the proper ingredients, time, and workspace, she’s capable of creating things such as stink bombs, momentary blackouts, truth elixirs, poisons, (to a very limited extent) medicines, temporary invisibility powder, and love potions. Etcetera.
5 years, young-adult-ish in Furrim years.
Pippin is of a species called Furrims, which are possum-koala-chinchilla hybrids of suffocating cuteness (see the little paragraph above Moira's information). He has an extra tuft of hair on his head and is mostly brown with lighter markings 'round the edges. For more information (and better drawings) see the species reference sheet here: [link]
Furrims are somewhat rare, but certainly not unheard of in Moira’s world; they’re basically exotic pets/ animal companions (often familiars for Gifted). Moira’s parents got her one for her fourteenth birthday, figuring an extravagant present was in order since she was so bummed about not getting her powers. Pippin likes everyone, but his present loyalty to Moira came about when he was bitten by a neighborhood dog and she nursed him back to health, refusing to let her parents take him to a vet. He’s followed her around (read: clung to her) tirelessly ever since.
Pippin is afraid of very few things, more from naieevety (lol what is this spelling you speak of) than anything else. He’s extremely curious, which often gets him into trouble, as well as generally happy and friendly to strangers. He really, really likes shiny objects and will swipe your jewelry if you’re not looking. He’s highly loyal to Moira and very quick to make friends. He can’t talk, but is generally able to express himself through body language. He’s also a very picky eater, and refuses to eat canned Furrim food from the pet store; usually he just swipes whatever he can reach from Moira’s plate.
As abilities go, Pippin is pretty much useless. He’s a decent climber, can use his adorablility to his advantage, and strands of Furrim fur are ingredients in some potions, but that’s about it.
(Clarification Note: 'Alchemy' in the technical sense is solely devoted to the transformation of various metals into gold. In this sense Moira is not an alchemist, but I call her one because it sounds cooler to be an Alchemist than a Potion-Maker or a Maker-of-Potions, and most people don't know the difference. If you noticed that while reading her history and were all WTF I apologize.)
TL;DR VERSION: Moira is a bitter and anitsocial teenager who does potion-ey things and has a cute furry animal-thing named Pippin.
IT IS COMPLETE. (Legit audition story coming soon-ish.) Will probably continue to tweak information before submitting it for consideration.
P.S. All hail the mighty Great Unicorn Prince Waffledorp. May his horn be ever-golden.
